Cultural Diversity
Just as fish don’t know they’re in water,
people often find it difficult to see and recognize their own culture
until they start comparing it with others.
In our profession understanding culture should be part of our business, regardless from which nation and or society we come from. Serving in an international environment we work with and establish relationships with people who all can come from and have a different culture. To be more effective in this relationship, which not only includes the colleague relationship in our work but also the customer relationship, it is very import that we are aware of the effect Cultural Diversity (CD) has or can have on our daily work.
This topic is divided into 3 sessions.
The first session (CD 1) (Still Under Construction) focuses mainly on Cultural Diversity and the colleague relationship. Here the main themes are CD; Definitions, Roots, Factors that make us different and Barriers for accepting CD. Furthermore, we look at; CD in the area of operations, try to answer what are our cultural difference (through all kinds of examples) and last but certainly not least how can we deal with / manage cultural differences.
The second session (CD 2) focuses more on the customer relationship. In this session we look at answering the following questions; what is meant by culture and how do cultures originate, how can we distinguish cultural differences between societies, what can be the effects of encountering Cultural Differences for our customers and for us in our work?
The third session (Still Under Construction) focuses on Intercultural communications because, people from different cultures communicate differently. The main themes of this session are; the Communication Process (general and intercultural), Communication Barriers (which ones are there and how do they affect communication) and Active Listening
